We remember our friend’s
special day such as their birthdays, parent’s anniversary or wedding day.
This
friend of mine is a very simple person; has facebook account but you can’t find
when his birthday will be. We are friends since 2010, because of Scouting.
Years had passed; I never greeted him “happy birthday” even once.
Until,
early this year one morning, I asked him when will be his birthday because its
been so long we are friends, his birthday is unknown to me.
Due to
our busy schedule every day, we usually leave offline messages on facebook. We
both have schooling but of different mode (chuckles).
Revealing
his personality is too awkward for him and so I refused to name this friend of
mine. I am sure, the moment he read this, he will feel uncomfortable again.
“Don’t worry by this time, you are anonymous.”
I left
an offline message asking, when will be his birthday, that was early morning.
That night, on the same day, it was Friday, and so the day after no classes, I
had a chance to chat with him even late in the evening. He usually open his
account on facebook because he has his own style of studying, chatting friends
while reviewing his exams or while doing researches for reports and others. He
replied that his birthday is related to the founder of the movement both of us
are associated with. He did not tell me the month and date I just research the
answer. He is very fond of making readers reading between the lines.
He
told me his birthday is not broadcasted intentionally not because he doesn’t
want to celebrate it but because he has his own reasons, for whatever it is, I
just respect him.
Until,
last day of January, early one evening, while chatting, I told him, starting
tomorrow will be your birthday’s countdown. But, because I am using broadband
flashdrive, prepaid, I just quickly send that message because time is running
out, the load is to be expired. But then, before the load expired I was able to
send the message and he quickly replied, because I told him my load is about to
expire, reply as soon as possible; I also asked him what gift he wants me to
send or give on him, he stated this…
“Regalo? Wala na lang. Kasi
natatambak lang sa kwarto ko kasi. Ang mas maganda pa, e magluto ka ng goto,
tawagin mo lahat ng street children tapos pakainin mo. ‘Yun, magandang regalo
na para sa akin. Ang tawag doon ay ACT OF CHARITY. Ang ginagawa ko e bumibili
ako ng maraming-maraming pandesal at ipinamimigay sa mga pulubi sa Manila.”
That was his reply. An
impressive statement, an unselfish one.
But the problem is, I
don’t know how to cook, (chuckles again).
